Reasons to Install a Skylight in Your Home

Blog

If you're looking for a way to update your home, why not consider installing a skylight? They offer numerous benefits, as explained below.

Extra Daylight

Sometimes it's challenging to enlarge or construct new vertical windows in a home, especially if you live in a built-up environment with neighbours close by. If you're in this situation, but you want more daylight streaming into your home, you could install a skylight instead. Because they face upwards, they bring light without compromising your privacy.

Additionally, a roof opening captures more light than a vertical window. Vertical windows usually receive bounced light from the ground and nearby objects, whereas a skylight catches direct illumination. You can control the light flowing into a room with a softening diffuser on the ceiling. Additionally, installers can place the skylight to not receive direct sunlight if you want a muted effect.

Ventilating Skylights

You can either install a fixed or a ventilating skylight. Fixed models bring in light, but you can't open them. Ventilating designs let you open them like a window, either manually or with a remote control. Ideal rooms for a ventilating skylight include kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas. In a kitchen, an open aperture will release cooking odours. In a bathroom, you can open the skylight to let humidity escape and reduce mould buildup.

A ventilating skylight lets you create a circular airflow in your home. Warm air naturally rises, so it will float outside once you open the skylight. The exiting air will create a vacuum effect in the house that you can take advantage of by opening a vertical window at a lower level to suction in the fresh air. This way, you'll create a circular airflow throughout your home without consuming energy.

Areas With No Windows

You may think that skylights only suit large rooms. However, they're perfect for bringing daylight into areas without windows. For example, your house might have a narrow window-less hallway or powder room. Such spaces can be centrally located in the building architecture and without an exterior window.

In these situations, you could install a sun tunnel. These apertures capture the sun via a roof dome and channel it through a tunnel in the roof cavity to the ceiling of whichever room you prefer. Because you won't need to switch on lights during the day, you'll save energy.

Expands Room Dimensions

You may wish that rooms in your home were more spacious. A skylight can help create the impression of space even if you don't push the walls outwards. By bathing rooms in natural light, they'll appear larger naturally. Additionally, a skylight breaks up the heaviness of an opaque ceiling, which makes rooms seem more open and thus larger.

Repairing or Replacing a Roof

Hello, welcome to my roofing blog, my name is John and I live in Alice Springs, Australia. I recently moved out here with my wife and two kids to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. We bought an old farmhouse and are in the process of renovating it. The place needs quite a bit of work. One of the biggest jobs so far has been sorting out the roof. It was missing a few tiles and I couldn't decide if we should try and repair it or if it would be better to have it repaired. Thankfully, my neighbour is something of an expert. He came and inspected the roof and recommended that we replace it. He explain how roofing works and the benefits of using different materials. I have learnt so much, I decided to start this blog.
