4 Reasons to Use Laser Cutting to Create Steel Roofing Panels

Blog

Roofers love using steel roofing panels to create roofs that are strong, durable, lightweight and energy efficient. Metal laser cutting has revolutionised the manufacture of steel roofing panels, allowing perfect panels to be created quickly and easily for any roofing project. Here are four reasons why laser cutting has become so popular in the creation of steel roofing panels.

1. Waste Less Material

The high precision of metal laser cutting makes it very popular with companies that are keen to reduce wastage in their business. Most alternative cutting methods waste a significant amount of metal, as they do not produce a clean cut. Laser metal cutting allows manufacturers to consume less steel in the creation of roofing panels. As a result, costs are lower and the environment benefits from the reduction in waste.

2. Use Less Energy

Metal laser cutting is a highly efficient method of cutting steel to shape. By using fibre-based high-speed lasers, which are a modern type of laser, manufacturers can improve the energy efficiency still further compared to using old-fashioned carbon dioxide lasers. Saving energy is a great way of reducing production costs and helping the environment.

3. Avoid the Need for Lubricants

Many steel cutting methods use abrasion to cut through the metal. The friction that is generated can cause the metal to heat up to dangerous temperatures. Manufacturers combat this effect by using lubricants to decrease friction during cutting. However, these lubricants have an associated cost and are also made from petroleum, a finite resource. Disposal of lubricants after they have been used can also be a problem.

Laser cutting avoids the need for lubrication when cutting steel. As a result, manufacturers can avoid spending money on the purchase and disposal of suitable lubricants.

4. Create Smooth Edges

Other cutting processes produce edges that are jagged or serrated. Sharp edges can make roofing panels dangerous to handle. They also look bad and have a negative effect on the overall appearance of the finished roof. It is possible to remove the serration by putting the metal panels through another processing step to file away the jagged pieces, but this increases costs and production time.

Metal laser cutting creates smooth edges in the first place. Therefore, there is no need to spend time or money on carefully finishing the steel panels. Roofers can safely and quickly fit the panels as soon as they have been manufactured.

Repairing or Replacing a Roof

Hello, welcome to my roofing blog, my name is John and I live in Alice Springs, Australia. I recently moved out here with my wife and two kids to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. We bought an old farmhouse and are in the process of renovating it. The place needs quite a bit of work. One of the biggest jobs so far has been sorting out the roof. It was missing a few tiles and I couldn't decide if we should try and repair it or if it would be better to have it repaired. Thankfully, my neighbour is something of an expert. He came and inspected the roof and recommended that we replace it. He explain how roofing works and the benefits of using different materials. I have learnt so much, I decided to start this blog.
