Benefits of Steel Roofing for a Home

Blog

Whatever material you cover your roof with influences your home's appearance and energy efficiency. Plus, your decision also has implications for the environment. Consider the following benefits of steel roofing.

1. Energy Efficiency

Steel roofs help to create an energy-efficient home. Rather than absorbing solar heat as concrete and terracotta tiles do, metal roofs reflect radiation away from your home. Thus, your air conditioner will devour less energy to maintain cool rooms. While lighter roof colours bounce more heat away than darker hues, you can coat a metal roof with a reflective film to keep it cooler regardless of its colour. Additionally, you can install blankets underneath the steel along with roof insulation. Combined, these layers shelter your home from the sun's heat. If you live in a colder climate, you can rely on insulation and install a dark coloured roof without a reflective film.

2. Resilience

While water is essential to life on earth, it poses a threat to homes if they're not adequately protected. To halt rust, steel undergoes various treatments. Galvanised steel is covered with a protective zinc layer. Zincalume has a blend of aluminium and zinc over a metal base. On top of this alloy, Colorbond has a hard paint layer for extra preservation from the elements. Additionally, steel is immune to termites and resistant to fire.

3. Recyclable

If you install anything on your roof, you need to consider what eventually happens to it when it ultimately requires replacing. You can relax when using steel, as it's recyclable. In fact, this metal, like many others, can be recycled multiple times to form countless objects over time. Any new metal roofing might contain some reused content already —plus, it can be recycled once you're finished with it. Your roofing won't be adding to a landfill with its mound of useless objects that can't degrade.

4. Colour and Profile Variety

While it's imperative that roof cladding is kind to the environment, it also needs to create a lovely cover for your home. Metal roofs are available in silver and also a range of colours such as cream, fawn, green, red, blue, and black. A roofing manufacturer can create sheets that display classic orb waves as well as other angular profiles. As well, they can produce metal sheeting that suits varying roofing shapes, including ones that are steeply pitched and flatter.

Thus, steel performs perfectly as a roofing material. It can help you to set up an energy-efficient home, and it's a recyclable substance which is better for the planet. You'll have plenty of design options regardless of the shape of your roof, which will usually last for decades after installation. For further insight, contact local roofing manufacturers.

Repairing or Replacing a Roof

Hello, welcome to my roofing blog, my name is John and I live in Alice Springs, Australia. I recently moved out here with my wife and two kids to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. We bought an old farmhouse and are in the process of renovating it. The place needs quite a bit of work. One of the biggest jobs so far has been sorting out the roof. It was missing a few tiles and I couldn't decide if we should try and repair it or if it would be better to have it repaired. Thankfully, my neighbour is something of an expert. He came and inspected the roof and recommended that we replace it. He explain how roofing works and the benefits of using different materials. I have learnt so much, I decided to start this blog.
