3 Signs Your Roof May Need Restoration Work

Blog

Your roof will need restoration work carried out on it at some point, so being aware of the signs that your roof is aging and degrading can allow you to tackle issues before serious damage occurs. Poorly maintained roofs are susceptible to leaks and aren't energy-efficient as damaged sections will allow air to travel freely in and out of your home. This can cause you to spend more on air-conditioning or heating in order to regulate the temperature in your home. Having roof restoration work carried out when it's needed can extend the life of your roof and can be significantly less expensive than having to replace your entire roof as a result of ignoring issues until they become big problems. Here are 3 signs your roof may need restoration work:

Roof Leaks

A leak is a common early sign that all is not well with your roof. Leaks don't tend to be expensive to fix, as they are often caused by a slipped tile, a crack in the flashing or even blocked guttering. However, if you ignore a leak you can be left with costly damage to your ceiling and walls, a mould problem and rotten timber trusses.

Sagging Areas

You should visually inspect your roof at ground level at least once a year to keep track of its condition. If you notice that an area of your roof seems to be sagging, you may be dealing with rotten roof rafters. If moisture has been soaking into your roof rafters for a period of time, it will eventually degrade and be unable to support the weight of the roof tiles. Fine cracks in tiles can let small amounts of moisture into the roof rafters without you ever seeing signs of a leak on your ceiling. As the roof rafters succumb to rot, you will eventually develop leaks coming through your ceiling, which means your roof could partially cave in if it's not repaired.

Damaged Roof Valleys

Roof valleys are areas of the roof that have been penetrated and sealed, such as where pipes, chimneys and vents protrude. They are often sealed with metal flashing, cement or tar, but seals can be damaged during high winds and heavy rainfall or due to the material aging. Water can seep into damaged areas and affect the structural stability of parts of your roof, which can lead to costly repairs.

Repairing or Replacing a Roof

Hello, welcome to my roofing blog, my name is John and I live in Alice Springs, Australia. I recently moved out here with my wife and two kids to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. We bought an old farmhouse and are in the process of renovating it. The place needs quite a bit of work. One of the biggest jobs so far has been sorting out the roof. It was missing a few tiles and I couldn't decide if we should try and repair it or if it would be better to have it repaired. Thankfully, my neighbour is something of an expert. He came and inspected the roof and recommended that we replace it. He explain how roofing works and the benefits of using different materials. I have learnt so much, I decided to start this blog.
